    Hello allan299,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Based on your post, I see that you have questions on how and when your computer shuts down, and how the Wi-Fi connection on your Mac is affected. I know it's nice to be able to properly manage what happens when your computer shuts down and goes into sleep mode. I'm happy to assist you in finding the best resolution.

You are correct, when your computer shuts down completely it will turn of Wi-Fi. If you enable Wake for network access, Wi-Fi will remain on, and you can access your computer’s shared resources, such as shared printers or iTunes playlists, even when your computer is in sleep mode. Setting a shutdown and startup schedule on your Mac can also be helpful.

Please see the following resources that will help set options that control your computer's energy use, set sleep and wake times for your Mac, and a schedule for your Mac to turn on or off or go to sleep:

OS X Yosemite: Energy Saver preferences

OS X Yosemite: Set sleep and wake times for your Mac

OS X Yosemite: Schedule a time for your Mac to turn on or off or go to sleep

    Best Regards.

Clarification question - is the computer shutting down (needs a restart) or going to sleep?

I have the energy saver in Sys Pref set so that the display is turned off after 5 minutes when on battery (on a MacBook Air mid 2013).  Have chosen 'put hard disk to sleep when possible' and 'slightly dim on battery'.......I listen to internet radio, fall asleep and when I awake the wifi is off and the computer is asleep -- which is a good thing!  But how does it decide to do this?  Do I have any say in it, except for scheduling times of the day and week (which I have not touched.)

Do you have wake for Network Access checked? If you do, the Wi-Fi should stay on. Otherwise it disconnects.
