Q: Lagging UI on Macbook Pro 2015 in native resolutions

I have really strange problem with my early 15 Macbook Pro Retina 13". The UI is a bit laggy when I set any native resolution the system offers. For example when I open this page: http://www.apple.com/iphone-6s/ , the animations are visibly choppy. But as soon as I set resolution to some not system supported value (2048x1280 for example) it all works well and as it should. Another weird thing - if I move a browser window from my laptop screen to external Full HD monitor, everything works well on that screen. But as soon as I drag it back, it is choppy again. Whole system lags, not just the browser. Did any of you came across this problem? I tried everything I found on the internet, but nothing helped. It has Intel Iris 6100 graphics card, intel i5 2.7 GHz processor and 8GB of ram. It is doing this since I bought it.

    Hello romantu,

Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand you are experiencing some lag with the entire computer. I'm happy to offer some things to try to isolate or repair this for you.

As always, we want to ensure the data on your Mac is safe. You will need to use Time Machine to make a backup to an external hard drive. The recommendation is to use an external hard drive two times the size of your internal hard drive. Use this article for help making a backup: Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Once you have a backup, you will want to verify if the system lag happens in safe mode and a test user. Safe mode will tell you if the issue is related to a startup item or plugins, and a test user will let you know if the issue is isolated to your account, or system wide. This will be difficult in safe mode because safe mode runs a bit slower. It may look like it is also experiencing the lag while it is not. Test this and try to see if the video lags the same as it did before. Also test if the issue goes away on the full HD monitor while in safe mode. Check this help article for how to get into safe mode: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. There is a section titled "If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode" you can work through if the issue does not happen the same or at all while you are boot into safe mode.

If you get through the safe mode article and still have the issues or the issue also happens while boot into safe mode, you will want to test if the issue is occurring in a test user. This article will help you do that. How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. There is a section titled "If an issue happens in only one user account" which leads to this help article: Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue. You will want to go through that article if the issue only happens in your main administrator user and not the test user.

If the issue happens in both safe mode and the test user, you will want to reinstall OS X. Use this help article: How to reinstall OS X. Check the section titled "If you're reinstalling for other reasons".

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

Thanks Eric for the answer. I already tried to reinstall the system before, but it didn't help. I'll try the other things you mentioned and will get back to you.

So I tried everything and the lag is still there. I am guessing it's something HW related...
