Q: Can't italicize text in iOS 9 notes on iPhone

I can't italize text in Notes after upgrading to iOS 9. I can bold and underline any text but not italicized. i don't know if it's the same on an iPad but it just won't work in my iPhone 6 Plus. I've rebooted the phone, close and relaunch the app, tried text in a new note or edit text in an existing note. I just can't itlicize any text. No problem with bold, underline, bullet and all othe other fancy stuff. It's weird. I've looked into Settings for Notes and nothing there. Anyone has this problem and a solution?

Thanks!

Chris

When you said this worked for you too, did you mean you had the same problem of not being able to italcize the text but then was able to do so following the steps I outlined?

On the iPad and iPhone sync, I never knew why but it's working now. I didn't re-format the iPad or anything like that, I just signed out of iCloud, left it for a few days, the one day when I signed back in, the notes just came back. I did notice, however, that besides all the notes in the iCloud, there were leftover or orphaned notes from the time when the iPad had problem syncing. I deleted these orphaned notes because they weren't syncing to iCloud even though they appeared under the iCloud account in the iPad.

The whole ordeal marred my experience with iOS devices. I'm not convinced yet to switch to Android. I just wish that Apple do something about these issues.

    Nick

Thanks for contacting AppleCare chat support. My name is Nick. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

    Me

Hi Nick, could you try on your iPhone?

    Nick

Hey Christopher, hope you are well! I see that you’re having an issue italicizing your text in the Notes app, is that correct?

    Me

Yes. Not your fault but this is the third time I'm repeating myself in a single chat session. Got cut off twice already.

    Nick

Oh no! Sorry to hear that happened! So I don't have you repeat any steps, what troubleshooting steps have you tried since this has been happening?

    Me

    Oh gosh.

    I have to repeat?

Ok let me get to the crux of the issue. Do you have an iPhone with you?

    Nick

    Yes

    is it updated to 9.3.5?

    Nick

    Yes

    Me

    ok great

Create a note in Notes please.

Go to Settings - Display & Brightness - Text Size and let me know how many notches is the text size setting please?

Could you turn on Accessibility Large Text please?

    Nick

I am in the middle text setting.

    Nick

    Sure

How many notches from the left?

    Nick

3 notches in, sitting on the 4th notch.

    Me

Could you slide the scale to 6 notches?

    Nick

    From left?

    Me

Yes. Now try italicising the text in Notes.

    Does it italicise?

To be sure, you can slide to 7 notches.

    Nick

Please allow me just a moment here while I give that a try.

    Me

Now slide it back down to 5 notches and try italicising again.

On my phone, i can italicise if the text setting is 5 notches or less. But I can't italicise if it is 6 notches or more.

I have tried it on a friend's phone as well. Same thing.

    Is this expected behaviour?

    Nick

This is the same thing on my device as well.

    Me

    REALLY??

    Hallelujah.

    Finally.

    So this is expected behaviour?

    Nick

Correct, I verified on another device I have running 9.3.4 still as well.

    Me

Yes, this problem has plagued me since iPhone 5!

After changing to iPhone 6 then 6S it's still there.

This is stopping me from buying any more upgrades, including the iPad Pro.

Now, the big question. Why? Why only italics? Bold and underline continue to work regardless of text size. Only italics stop working after 6 notches.

    Nick

Sorry to hear that! What I can do is make sure this feedback gets filed on my end here. If you’d like you can also submit product feedback about this at [apple.com/feedback] . We have a team here at Apple, who's entire job is dedicated to reviewing this feedback, and escalating it to the proper outlets (such as the engineers for iTunes, iPhone, iPad, etc.), so you can rest assured that your voice will be heard. The more feedback we receive about product features, the more likely we are to implement them. I'd be more than happy to email you this link as well if you'd like.

    Me

I tried that. I spoke to an Apple rep over the phone and he promised me that he would escalate the issue. We spent 1 hour on the phone because he wanted to make sure he got all the details so that my case gets to the front of the queue, etc.

But that was 3 months ago and I haven't heard from him since.

Anyway, i Just want to know that this is not a problem with my phone.

And that it is a design flaw.

I hope you guys get it fixed because there are many elderly people who want their font size to be large.

And when they do that, they can't italicise the text and it is frustrating.

    Nick

Correct, no issue with the phone there. I can certainly understand wanting to have that as an option on the device as well, so i’m going to make sure this feedback still gets submitted for review.

    Me

Young people can live with 3-4 notches but not the elderly with poor eyesight.

It would be pointless to have Accessibility - Large Text option when that cripples the italic function in Notes.

I hope to hear from Apple on this problem.

    Thank you.

    Nick
