Q: Workout App

I'm wondering if the workout app makes the AppleWatch track calories differently/more precicely.

 

Say I take a 1 hour walk without starting the workout app. Would the calories count in the activity app get updated differently compared to taking the exact same walk but with the workout app started and outdoor walk selected?

    I think the activities are just to tag what you did and compare sessions of the same activity. You would be putting the same effort of activity in, so dont see why the metric would be any different.

     

    Think the idea is if you go walking every day, you can look back at previous walks and beat your score, or do it for longer.

    Hi

     

    Yes - tracking an Outdoor Walk via the Workout app may result in a more accurate estimation of your results from that activity.

     

    When you track an activity using the Workout app and specify an activity type, your watch uses the most appropriate sensors and data sources to estimate the results of that workout.

     

    For example, when recording an Outdoor Walk:

     

    • If you also take your iPhone along (with Location Services and Bluetooth enabled), your watch can access GPS data from the iPhone when estimating pace and distance.
    • If you do not take your iPhone along, the watch relies on data from the built-in accelerometer when estimating pace and distance.
    • Data from the heart rate sensor is used when estimating Active Calories, including calculations that are tailored to that specified activity type.

     

    Calibrating your watch also helps to improve the accuracy of various estimations made by the Activity app and Workout app. More information and instructions for calibrating your watch (including for resetting any existing calibration data and starting afresh) are available via the link below.

     

    Estimations of results also depend on your personal information. To check that this is accurate - and to update it over time:

     

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch tab > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.
