Q: Questions about International Texting and Imessage

Ok so my girlfriend is going to Spain. Her phone does not have data so she is planning on texting me via Imessage(blue bubble rather than green) My phone has a shared data plan. Now as far as I'm aware, so long as both the texts are blue bubbles rather than green, I won't get charged .50$ per text. It would be the same as if Im texting her in the U.S. Is this correct? Or would I use more data via Imessage Also since she won't be on wifi 24/7, does that mean when I send texts to her when she is not on wifi(she is keeping her phone on airplane mode to avoid charges) I will get charged? So normally, If i text her when she isnt on wifi, it is SMS(green bubble), but is converted to blue bubbles, if this happens will I get charged?

Thanks so much for answering one or all of my questions, its all confusing. I just want to avoid being charged, but also want to avoid a messenger app. Thanks!

That is correct. iMessage uses Internet and does not text. the one thing I would disable is "Send as SMS" in Settings > Messages. This means that if your message is not received after a certain time (i.e. your phone is turned off) it will automatically send it as a text.

As long as there is a internet connection and it says iMessage it shouldn't send as a text or automatically send as a text if you disable that option on the phone.

For what it's worth, iMessage doesn't handle having data turned on and off very gracefully. The fact that your friend will only be connected to data part of the time may cause iMessage problems.
