Q: time machine
Hello there,
I would like to use the time machine to back up my MacBook pro, in order to reinstall mac os x. I will use an external hard disc with other data on it, but there is enough space for the back up as well. After the backup and restoring from the external hard disc, would there be any problem with the data on the hard disc? Is it possible for the data to be deleted?
Regards,
Lefteris

Hello lefterisvl83,
Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. I know how important knowing more about restoring OS X software and using Time Machine is to you! It sounds like you want to use an external hard drive to backup your MacBook Pro with Time Machine, and then reinstall the OS X software on your MacBook Pro. First, if your external drive is not formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), you may want to back up the data that is on that external drive, as Time Machine requires certain formats to work properly:
Backup disks you can use with Time Machine
Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac
Then you can reinstall the OS X software on your MacBook Pro and restore your personal data from the Time Machine backup. You also mentioned deleting the Time Machine data, which you can use the built in Disk Utility app to erase the Time Machine partition.
Disk Utility 12.x: Erase a disk, CD, or DVD
Cheers!
