Q: Safari is very slow with DuckDuckGo set as default search

30 seconds plus when searching via the address bar.  All of the other default search engines are fine.  DuckDuckGo is fine using Firefox or Chrome.  Before I go switching browsers (so fed up I am preparing to move back to Firefox) - is there anything I can do?

Third party add ons, plug-ins and extensions can cause problem like this sometimes.

Not seeing anything obvious, other that what appears to be an issue with ... maybe the external hard drive?

I found the same thing using Duck Duck Go with either Safari or Firefox. In fact it was so bad I have since totally removed it from my Macs.

I don't use Chrome at all so I can't comment of that one.

You have multiple Safari extensions installed of which one or more may be causing a conflict with the DuckDuckGo search engine.

    Safari Extensions:

Save to Pocket - Read It Later, Inc. - http://getpocket.com/ (2015-11-07)

        Add To Amazon Wish List - Amazon.com - https://www.amazon.com/wishlist?ref=cm_wl_saf_ext (2013-02-10)

        1Password - AgileBits - https://agilebits.com/onepassword (2016-07-22)

        Shortly - Zhusee (ZZHC Studio) - http://zzhc.org/shortly/ (2014-06-11)

        Adblock Plus - Eyeo GmbH - https://adblockplus.org/ (2016-07-22)

So go to your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. The uninstall one extension at a time to test. I'd start with the Adblock Plus.

and try troubleshooting Safari third party plug-ins. Help here >  If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support

removed all of them - one by one.  No change.  Just as slow as ever.  While searching - it also locks up other open tabs, which appear blank until the search completes.

Please note the indication that Macintosh HD is having problems.

There is not enough storage space available.

It is better to take the Mac to the nearest Apple store  to have it tested.

    Contact Apple support.

    Best.
