Q: Using an iMac as a monitor for PC?

The apple page for TDM says Mac to Mac but I see around the web that people have done exactly this. Is it possible with macs newer than 2011? I have an late 2012 iMac 27", if it is possible what are the compatibility requirements for cabling? Any help would be appreciated.
