Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand from your post that when you shut down your iMac for a few days and then turn it back on you have to turn your Time Capsule off and then on again as well. I know how important it is for you to be able to have your Time Capsule running smoothly. The first step I would recommend is to make sure your Time Capsule firmware is up to date. This article has information on how to automatically and manually check for firmware updates for your Time Capsule:
Keep your base station up to date
After updating the firmware see if the issue persists.
Best Regards

Aug 13, 2016 3:36 PM in response to Alwayswantingtohelp1by Ladro Maltese,Hi,
Thanks for getting back on this. Yes, I forgot to mention that my firmware is up to date (7.7.7). It is very strange really, since it backs up no problem every hour even when iMac is on "sleep", but the moment i turn it off, back to square one.
Any other options that I may try out?
Regards

There is a way to monitor your base station for problems that may shed some light on the subject for you.
Monitor base stations for problems
You can have AirPort Utility automatically monitor all of the base stations on your network. If a problem is detected, AirPort Utility opens and provides instructions to help resolve the problem.
-
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
-
Choose AirPort Utility > Preferences.
-
To investigate problems that may cause the base station’s status light to flash amber, select “Monitor AirPort base stations for problems.”
After selecting the checkbox, you can do either of the following:
-
To limit the number of base stations monitored to those set up from the computer you’re using, select “Only monitor AirPort base stations that I have configured.”
-
To monitor your wireless devices remotely, select “Monitor AirPort base stations over the Internet using Bonjour.”
-
Cheers

Aug 14, 2016 3:56 PM in response to darren.sby Ladro Maltese,Hi,
I had a look and all options had already been selected except for “Only monitor AirPort base stations that I have configured.” I have selected that just now and, fingers crossed, lets hope that it will prove fruitful. I will obviously have to see how it goes after not having used the iMac for a few days or unless you can suggest another way.
Thanks again for your support and patience.
Regards
Simon.
