Q: MacPro 2009 suddenly lost sound and startup time is over a minute

Hi just a couple of days ago my early 2009 MacPro  started taking well over a minute to start up when it used to take less than 30 seconds.

About  the same time I lost the sound from my Analog Audio Line out port.  (Don't know if there is any connection there).

I can still use my head set for  sound ok when it's plugged into a USB port.

When I go to the Sound pane there is  no Line Out port visible.  I  have a Boise radio plugged into the line out port , having the sound piped through to the Aux. setting on the radio.  It's been working fine for many years.

I tried plugging in a spare set of powered speakers,  the Line Out  choice showed up in the Sound pane but still couldn't get any sound out of the speakers when I selected it.

The loss of the sound is a nuisance  but I can still use my head set.

It's the slow start up that is bothering me,  even though once it has finally started up the computer runs fine and  responds quickly.

Something has changed drastically  and I feel like something is going on and it doesn't bode well for me.

Hope someone can give me some good news and a fix.

Thanks

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Try opening Disk Utility and repairing the disk.

Also, consider posting an EtreCheck report. This may help us get to the bottom of your sound issue as well. http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Thanks ,  I appreciate that you responded so quickly.

I have repaired permissions 2 or 3 times since  the  problem started and it didn't help.

I'd  never heard of this EtreCheck report so I thought I'd try that first and see if you can decipher it for me before I try lllaass's suggestions.

    Here is the report:

    EtreCheck version: 3.0 (300)

You have a lot of unnecessary stuff that frequently causes problems. Uninstall these:

    - Avast using the uninstall instructions provided by Avast

    - CleanMyMac using the manual method of:

    http://uninstallmacapplications.blogspot.com/2015/09/uninstall-cleanmymac-3-comp letely-n.html

    - Trusteer using:

    http://www.trusteer.com/en/support/uninstalling-rapport-mac-os-x

    - What is associated with:

            20%    Microseven

    Uninstall/update:

    Startup Items:

        ArcanaStartupSound: Path: /Library/StartupItems/ArcanaStartupSound

        ProTec6b: Path: /Library/StartupItems/ProTec6b

        TiVoDesktop: Path: /Library/StartupItems/TiVoDesktop

Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite

That Mac is a mess, having been modified with so many ill-conceived "anti-virus", "cleaning", and "maintenance" products that it is unreasonable to expect it to function normally.

Slow performance should be the expected result, and that is exactly what you are describing. How would you like to proceed?

Thanks lllaass,  the two items you mentioned Rapport and CleanMyMac turned out to be an empty folder for Rapport and 4 log files for CleanMyMac and I got rid of those, also trashed the obsolete Startup Items.

I only use two antivirus programs,  and have for a few years now without any problems.   They are Avast and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, I use those because they seem to be the overwhelming favourites of the Apple Support Communities.   There may be remnants of others left on my hard drive from prior years but for the most part I've tried to trash the ones that didn't work out.

I don't know how else you can find out how a anti-virus program is going to work without downloading and trying it out.

So how should I proceed next ?

Hi John,  I'd like to point out that I was not describing slow performance but slow boot up time,  which did not slowly deteriorate but happened over night.

Once booted up my computer runs fine.

    - All antivirus apps like Avast have been know to cause problems.

    - Malwarebytes is discussed and recommended I this form and other places. That app only idenifies and will remove "malware" that was previously installed when you run the app. Is does noting after running the app until you run the app again. It does NOT actively scan you Mac during normal operation of the Mac.

    - From the description here

    https://buy.malwarebytes.com/bundle/us/?ht=malware&c=g-bx01-us&s=058e.g15&k=malw arebytes%20anti%20malware&t=kwd-10704542300&pos=1t1&url=https://buy.malwarebytes .com&gclid=CjwKEAjwrcC9BRC2v5rjyvSbhWASJACKkjDzd6cOq2-nyX63gvbsv_rEimKEJw3SjoAVk acCZ-n9mhoCEsLw_wcB

It Appears that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is an active scanner that you install and it continuously scans your Mac. That is not Malwarebytes that only identifies malware.

    - Also, having two continuous scanners running at the same time is asking for problems

None.  I had Sophos for a while but it slowed down my Mac so I uninstalled it.

Some apps require use of an uninstaller which usually comes with the install download.

If you only Trash those apps from the Applications folder part f the apps will still be present.

Yes I intend to use an uninstaller where possible or one of the better App clean up programs.
