Q: spinning beach ball with every click

I've got a 3.5 year old Mac Mini 2.3 GHz Core i5 with 4 GB of RAM running OS X 10.9.2. A couple months ago, at no specific moment in time, my mini started to slow down, it's continued to get slower and slower to the point now where every time I click on anything, I get a spinning beach ball for as many as 10 - 20 seconds before the Mac processes what I've done. I have run permission repairs and also bought and installed CleanMyMac2, while it "cleaned" 50+ GB of junk, my Mac's behavior has not changed. Anyone got any other ideas?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), 4 GB RAM 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

Remove the anti-virus.  As a general rule, the forum contributes do not like anti-virus, Mac cleaners, nor memory cleaners.   We have seen way too many cases of poor performance, or other undesirable side-effects from those classes of products.

Do you use all these kernel extensions? Or are some of them left over from years ago, but no longer used.  Suggest removing any of them that you do not know you absolutely need.

        295 MB    Swap Used

If after removing the above apps, which are consuming memory because they are always running in the background, if you are still using Swap, you might consider adding more RAM to your Mac.  Crucial.com and MacSales.com are well respected Mac RAM vendors.

            17%    AddressBookSourceSync

You might want to Google AddressBookSourceSync, as it should not be running constantly, and I suspect it is on your system, or you just made some address book changes.

        [loaded]    com.bittorrent.BitTorrent.plist (2016-02-23) [Support]

If you are constantly moving data into/out of your system via bittorrent, this can affect accessing your hard disk.

        Dropbox    Application  (/Applications/Dropbox.app)

        Google Drive    Application  (/Applications/Google Drive.app)

These guys can also keep your disk busy as well as your network, if a lot of the files being watched get touched.

Speaking of your hard disk.  Your Mac is 4 years old.  It is technically possible that your hard disk is starting to experience a lot more retries than it did when it was new, and this can affect performance.

If nothing else improves your performance, you may want to make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store for a free evaluation.  Ask them to check out the hard disk for excessive retries.  Well maybe do that before spending money on more RAM, but after cleaning up the software you have installed.
