Q: MacBook Pro 2015 turns on but screen stays black...

From your description, it sounds like your MacBook Pro is getting power, as you hear the startup chime and see the light on the keyboard. So, it seems the issue may be with your display or video card.
About the screens you see when your Mac starts up
Power On
When you first turn on your Mac, the screen is off (black) and you hear a startup chime. Your Mac initializes its BootROM and memory (RAM). It then performs a power-on self test (POST) and a BootROM test. If you hear additional beeps or chimes at this point, this indicates a possible hardware issue and startup halts. If you've added memory to your Mac, check to make sure it's installed properly.
Blank screen
After the power-on self test is complete, your Mac sends a video signal to your connected displays. The display screen might appear black or gray at this point in the startup sequence and the display's backlight should turn on. If you don't see an image appear on your screen after a few moments, try turning up your display's brightness. If you're using an external display, make sure it's connected properly and turned on.
shaynidw, If turning up your display's brightness doesn't help, do you have an external display (computer monitor or TV) that you can attach to your MacBook Pro to test?
Also, you can try starting your computer in safe mode to see if you get different results.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up
If the issue persists, you may need to take your computer to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider so they can inspect the video card and cables to isolate the issue.

When powering on my MacBook, it does not make any additional sounds or chimes other than the normal start up chime.
Yes! I connected my MacBook to my TV with a HDMI cable and it successfully displayed my desktop on it. However my laptop screen remained black. So would this mean there's nothing wrong with my video card, as I am able to use an external monitor successfully?
Before I had tried connecting my MacBook to the TV, I tried booting to safe mode (shift + power , right?) but to no avail, the screen remained black.

Thanks for the update regarding your issue. Glad to hear you are able to see what's happening on an external monitor. It sounds like a hardware issue (possibly a loose cable) between your video card and the display on your MacBook Pro. A physical inspection by an Apple Store Genius or an Authorized Service Provider will confirm or isolate further. Click on the link offered in my earlier post to get this issue resolved.
