Q: How do I delete projects including attached event and clips?

I need to create space on my external harddisk and have been trying to delete projects, but no extra space is appearing. I tried to also delete some shots that are in an event, but the original media still seems to be there and it does not free any space.

So I need to delete whole projects including event and clips, and also in some projects and events reduce the amount of clips including original media. How do I achieve this?

I use Final cut pro x and operating system OS X El Capitain version 10.11.5

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Select a a clip in the Browser then hit Shift-Command-R.

The will reveal the file path to that clip.

Set the Finder to column view first for easy viewing.

    Hi,

Thanks for tip. I was in final cut and did what you said and was directed to finder where the clip was and could remove it. But now I have a red box with missing file in my event. I can´t get rid of it. How do I get rid of the original media as well as the event clip. In my case I also want to remove whole projects including clips. Sometimes only the project though and keep event and clips. How do I do that?

FCP X is non destructive meaning the clips you see in the Browser are not the REAL media files but representations/file paths to wherever the REAL clips are stored.

You have a RED box because you have deleted a REAL clip from it's storage drive.

Put the clip back to get rid of the RED box.

Right now I do not know exactly what you are trying to achieve or mean by deleting clips, Events and Projects.

Everything you see in the FCP X interface are only representations of the REAL Media and use very little space.

Try this and have a look, but it is unwise to move stuff around here:

Navigate to a Library of FCP X using the Finder.

Right click the Library and select Show Package Contents.

Choose a Project name and you can see all the stuff associated with it:

Original media are the REAL files that were captured/Imported, these use lots of space.

Render Files can also be large and can be deleted whenever you like.

You may have other folders like Analysis Files that can be deleted with safety if not required.

    In summary,

Original Media files when deleted give you a RED Offline clip, never delete unless you are 100% sure you're done.

Other files can be re-generated by FCP X.

The above is just skimming the basics.

Some studying up in the FCP X manual would help you get to know the "what's what" and how it all fits together.

You can remove an Event by selecting it then use File>Move Event to Trash.

    Projects are stored within Events.

All the stuff associated with the Event will go to a Temp Trash in FCP X.

It can be restored by using Command-Z while FCP X remains open.

After FCP X is closed it's all gone so BE SURE.
