Q: Fix Safari!

I would like to add my voice to the complaints about Safari! I am not sure whether the issues arise from updates to Safari or to El Capitan. In the last couple of month's I got so frustrated with Safari that I installed Firefox on my MacBook Pro. It runs better than Safari but still crashes. I have also installed the latest version of Adobe Flash and that also has not solved the problems.

Safari simply cannot handle pages that have pop-up windows and embedded video etc. It works for a while but them seems to get clogged through not being able to purge its cache. This means that when I go to read my digital New York Times, I get through a couple of articles and then the website freezes. I have to restart Safari and often my computer to continue reading. This happens on any website that is heavy with images, video or pop-ups and therefore makes web browsing a chore. I can use Safari to check my Outlook webmail but anything more complex than that lead to frozen web pages.

Safari is working fine on El Capitan v10.11.5 and Safari 9.1.1 for me.

The problems you are experiencing may be due to Safari extensions or third party plug-ins.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for improvement. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

It doesn't seem to be related to 3rd party plugins. I have essentially nothing other than Java. My wife has moved to Chrome. I've resisted that but am going to follow suit soon probably. Apple doesn't really care about its MacOS apps anymore. It sees its future in junk like the iWatch and in trivial updates of the iPhone. Sad.

Sometimes there are some strange issues when upgrade OSX.

You can update your Safari to the latest version : https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204416

Most of time the issue can be fixed.

I think a reasonable assumption is that people who find there way to this discussion and post have indeed upgraded to the latest version. For the record, at the time of this posting, my Safari is Version 9.1.2 (11601.7.7) and that IS the latest version.

I have also gotten rid of all Safari extensions.

And I get Penthesheila's problem exactly. Over and over.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
