Q: Is there a better way to delete Notes?

I tried asking this in the Yosemite section but never received a reply. Maybe that was the wrong place.

In the Notes app, if you want to delete a note, there appears to be several ways, including selecting the note and pressing the Delete key that appears on most keyboards. But all the various methods of deletion result in a dialog box asking if you really want to Delete. None of the modifier keys appear to work as an override so that one can delete without the dialog box appearing.

Has anyone discovered a way to delete a note in one step?

One reason you might not receive a reply is because no one knows of a method. My guess is, there isn't one.

In the Notes app, on the left, there is a panel (after clicking the side panel icon in the menu bar), on top is "All iCloud", select that one and select the note you want to delete, it deletes without discussion.

After you delete one in there there is a "recently deleted" entry underneath on the left side ( a bit like a delete in dropbox).

I don't use iCloud so I never saw that option.

Thanks for the tip - maybe it will help someone else.

I guess I should have double checked. I'm having a hard time even getting a "Do you really…" dialog.

Not sure what you mean dialabrain.

If you have a Note in the default On My Mac Notes folder, and either right-click or control-click it and choose Delete, or choose the note and press the Delete key on the keyboard, there is a dialog that appears asking "Are you sure you want to delete the note (title of note)?"

You don't get this? Maybe you are keeping all your notes in iCloud? The other responder in this thread stated that they don't get that dialog with notes kept in iCloud.

You could set up a Keyboard Shortcut from System Preferences>Keyboard>Shortcuts.

Highlight App Shortcuts in the left column, click the + button and from the dropdown menu

select Notes, then enter Delete in the Menu Title item, and in the Keyboard Shortcut space input what you would like to Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 16.23.18.pnguse as the shortcut. For example I entered F1 you can input anything. See the following screenshots.

Go back to Notes and confirm it works, if not right away you may need to re-launch Notes.

Ha I wish Apple Support Communities would allow you to go back to edit a reply, they used to.

Hope my response earlier makes sense as some text has ended up in the wrong place.

    Oopsy.

I don't use Notes except when questions come up. I only have two notes in iCloud and one "On My Mac". I don't get a dialog using either method from either section. It just creates a "Recently Deleted" "folder". I don't actually see folders.

I tried the shortcut idea originally but it never worked. Could be my Logitech Solar keyboard, though setting shortcuts in other apps works. In Notes, I can set it up so the menu shows F14 as the Delete shortcut but pressing it does nothing. I tried several other key combos, like Option-Command-D etc. but, though they show up fine in the menu, pressing the key combos either doesn't work or simply moves focus to the first note with D in the beginning of the title. If I choose Delete from the menu with any of the new shortcuts, I can delete, but with a dialog.

I also have Notes on a different Mac with El Capitan installed so I will try some of these suggestions there to see if its a problem with either my Yosemite system or the Logitech keyboard I'm using with this iMac.

@dialabrain: I believe the folders are titled Notes in your screenshot, under the two sections. You can create new folders with different names or edit the the titles of those default folders named Notes.

Yes. I should have said "folder icons". It's been one of those days.

"I don't use iCloud so I never saw that option"

Even if you do not use it, it is there for you, don't confuse it with iCloud Drive.

It syncs iTunes and iDevices Calendars and Contacts and is for FindMyiPhone....

Just sign in  with your Apple ID once (https://www.icloud.com) and you will have a copy of your  Notes also.

I'm not confusing it with iCloud Drive. I do not use iCloud for sync. (Let's not go down that path, please)

To delete the note highlight/select the middle column and use the shortcut.

To delete the text within the note, select the text, and use the shortcut.
