Q: downloading big files getting spinning beachball of death

Hi!

I have experienced several crashes with spinning beach ball and complete crash downs while downloading big folders containing files up to 8 GB to my SSD. After deleting some files on SSD (about 25GB), I was able to proceed download additional 25 gb of data, but It looks like it gets stuck again.

Right now, I am testing to download on external USB key, to see if I am able to finish my download.

I run Mavericks 10.9.5 on a 2011 Macbook Pro 15". I upgraded to 16 Gb RAM and SSD (Samsung 250 EVO) in optibay last December and made a clean install of Mav. I still have my original HDD in drivebay using it for data.

So my questions are:

1. Is it possible that my SSD have bad sectors?

2. Do I need to put my SSD into drivebay to run OS from there?

3. Possible bad drive cables after too much overheating (2011 Macbook pro discrete GPU failure)?

Thanks, Luke

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), null

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account and then downloading.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

What I did later then, it was downloading to an external USB key and was able to download the remaining files. I also tried to just copy more date from external disk to my macintosh hd and I was unable to finish the process. It looks like I am not able to write on the rest of my hard drive.

I will try Etrecheck later today and report the results back.

    FOr now, thanks.
