Q: Unplugging Screen and Camera from old iMac

OK, I have an iMac from late 2006 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. Recently, the screen has just been going crazy and it's barley useable. So I got an external monitor. The monitor has a higher resolution than the iMac so I had to set the iMac up to extend the screen to I can use the full resolution. Could I just disassemble the iMac and unplug the built-in screen? Would the iMac still work? Also, I have an iSight camera attached to the top of my monitor, so I have no use for the iMac built-in iSight camera. Could I unplug that too? How about the microphone on the iMac? I have taken apart this iMac before, so I know where all the cables are.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6), Late 2006, 1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo

The computer is 11 years old, have you considered just replacing it?

It's still fast and does everything I need it to do, so there's no reason to replace it.

Okay, well to answer your question, no, do not disassemble the iMac. Simply connect the external display to it and use the external display. As far as your iSight camera and your replacement camera, you may have to use the iSight camera, you can try the external camera you bought and see if it is recognized. To be honest I don't know if it will work or not.

an external aftermarket monitor will not fit correctly in that case, but you can purchase aftermarket Apple replacement parts from a number of distributors. Sticking an aftermarket part where it was not designed to be installed could present itself to be a fire hazard or worse.

My external monitor is actually an old Apple Cinema Display, not some aftermarket one.

I Doubt it will work though. You seem to want to create a FrankenMac.

OK, there seems to be some confusion here. I'm not asking for a solution for my screen problem, I just want to know if my iMac will still turn on if I unplug the screen, camera, and microphone.

Does the cinema display have it's own camera and microphone? If it does then you may be able to use them. However, if the external display does not you will need to use the iMacs microphone and camera. It's really that simple.

The display does not have a camera and microphone, but I do have an iSight camera plugged into it that has a microphone on it and it works just fine.
