Q: Apple ID imposes its picture on gmail account. I can't change the picture in gmail.

My apple ID has been set with a silly icon my friend has chosen when she was setting it up for me. Now the photo appears in my gmail mails, although my gmail chat still retained my old gmail profile picutre. However, like I say, when I sent/receive mails, my account is accompanied by the ridiculous icon.

I have changed my icon on iCloud, disconnected gmail from my mac mail, even disconnected/removed the apple ID on my MAC and yet in my Gmail account the icon/photo still appears. How can I change that?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), gmail-apple id sync

Did you (or your friend) use your Gmail account to set up your Apple ID?

Yes. I set up my Apple ID a long time ago. And yesterday while setting things up on my new MacBookPro I initiated the Mail on my Mac synchronizing it with gmail. Today I noticed my emails have different photo then yesterday.

The picture is more than likely stored in your Google Address book with yourself as the contact.  Open Address Book/Contacts for the Mac, view "all google" contacts and delete the entry under your own name.   If that does not work then you would have to sign into iCloud.com and change your apple id picture under account settings.

i came across this prob today. I found that my random photo appeared not only on gmail (I originally suspected gmail contact/addressbook issue) but also my other business addresses too. It was the apple address book where my photo was attached - removing/replacing this photo in the apple address book (where my email account was linked to) resolved the issue.

Same for me while upgrading to Yosemite (did not sync before that)

    Topic on Googel Products Forums

    Marketing goal only = illegal

    - Touching Google's identity is like toching Apple's one. It is illegal by their marketing rules.

Technically, it can be illegal too. I only see two ways to do so and both are no legit.

    - Using the sync process to override your profile without consent

    - Using your browser to override the UI live (local action)

    Both are undecent ways.

Apple, please takle this topic seriously.

I cherish both Google and Apple, but one does not win marketing identity that way. On the contrary.

    SOLUTION

All the three steps have to be done.

    1. Go in Gmail setting, seek the profile picture and change it
    2. Go into Gmail's Contact, seek your profile name and change the attached picture
    3. Clear the cache of each installed browser : file cache, cookies AND hosted apps data.

    WARNINGS

    • Do NOT authorize Yosemite (during install) or Safari (after install) or any Apple applications to connect to your Google account(s) without knowing the consequences.
    • Apple will NOT warn or explain you the action it will take over your Google accounts and profiles. Apple will not proceed like Gravatar or applications installed from Google Marketplace (those are obliged to warn you and ask you for authorizations with details description of the actions involved if you install an app)

CRITICS on OSX 10.9 and 10.10

    • OSX  is highly invasive in regards of Google products (not with others so far and after investigation)
    • OSX takes your private and local data (profile here) and force it to be public (here by modifying your Google profile). ### Think twice if you have personal information or picture on your local computer (i.e. on your local profile) you do not want to share online ###. Apple will disregarded your private life without warning.

What worked for me: doing everything above, plus going into iMessage on Mac > Clicking the messages dropdown menu > change my picture. Set it to be the same photo as the one you use on Google.

I had the same problem.  I went to my "Google Contacts" in Gmail and found my contact card.  The goofy icon was right there.  I changed it by clicking on the icon and picking the pic I had set up before from the choices.  Easy!
