Q: Am I able to view iPhone photos through finder

I'm trying to view and edit photos from my iPhone through Finder.  Is this possible?

When I plug my iPhone in I'm able to import photos using Photos but for some reason my mac doesn't recognise it as a device so I can't edit them through Finder.  My concern is that if I import them through Photos it's going to clog up my HD as for some reason duplicates every photo imported.

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

    No.

iPhone runs on the iOS platform.

    Mac runs on OS X.

    Two different operating systems.

An alternative would be to transfer the photos from your iPhone to your Mac using the Image Capture app located in your Applications folder.

Excellent.  This is just what I was looking for, thanks.  In theory then I can import directly onto an external HD then.

I just find it really annoying that iPhotos duplicates every photo.  If I'd have known this before I purchased my mac I'd have probably gone for a larger flash storage.  Too late now.

You can import to the location of yrou choice using Image Capture

and you are mistaken - iPhoto does not duplicate everything - in fact it duplicates nothing - and iPhoto is a dead product as of over a year ago when support for it was discontinued
