Q: Smart Cover on iPad Air does not work in iOS 8

I have a 32 GB iPad Air, and recently upgraded to iOS 8. My Smart Cover power functions stopped working after the upgrade. It will no longer sleep or wake the iPad. Is this something other users are experiencing? Does anyone have a fix?

I have a brand new iPad Air 2, and am having the exact same problem.  In fact, I took it back today and exchanged it.  Still having the same exact problem with the new one.  It's got to be software related.  I've tried three different cases... same problem.

    Thanks Peter.

"That is how it works". A bit depressing really. Apple have removed one layer of functionality by merging the lock and the sleep. Remember they used to be discrete setting controls in earlier OS's. By "at home", I meant that I rarely take it out and about, and would rather have it set up (manually) to just go when I open it, again, as my other machine with my beloved iOS 5 allows.

Why would anyone ever want to keep it running at full power with the screen on when the cover is shut? It used to still play music etc. with the cover shut ("dozing"). That lock setting simply applies the wrong system control.

I did not say works fine on iOS 8 (for others who are reading) – I said the battery stopped draining when I upgraded to iOS 8.1 with the appropriate settings activated.

Settings, General, Lock/Unlock - leave it on.

Settings , Passcode, Turn it off.

That is two separate functions, but good luck if you ever mislay the iPad.

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for trying to help, but you are forgetting the problem further up this thread. The iPad will NOT sleep if passcode is unlocked. That is the new bug with v8+. Hence lots of people reporting battery drain in various other threads too.

There used to be a function actually called 'sleep' in Settings and that is gone.

I do lock the thing if ever I take it out of the house! ;-)

I have iOS 8.1 and it "sleeps". There is no bug that exists with mine.

    You need to go Settings-->General-->Auto-Lock

How do you lock it if you don't use a Passcode?

Like Star Traveler says; Your iPad does not resemble mine.  No such bug in ios8.  I suggest you start from scratch with a new install then reinstall apps, do not restore from backup (which should be done with all upgrades in my opinion)

Totally agree with that upgrade advice!

I have an iPad Air 2, 64 Gb, wi-fi only. The screen stays on when I close the cover (no click sound) UNLESS I enable the Lock/Unlock toggle (and then there IS a click sound when I close the cover). Like others, I am used to having the screen turn off (with a click) when the cover is closed, but in the past it did not immediately lock; it waited until the respective Auto-Lock time had elapsed before it locked. I could open the cover and, if that time interval had not elapsed, the screen would light up (no unlock code required).

On my iPad mini 2, the screen goes dark (with a click sound) when I close the cover but does not lock until the Auto-Lock time has elapsed.

Both iPads are running iOS 8.1.2. So this seems to be specific to the iPad Air 2.

While my cases (on both the iPad mini 2 and iPad Air 2) are not genuine Apple cases, both function fine in all respects. To be precise, the case on the iPad Air 2 works perfectly when the Lock/Unlock toggle is turned on; but the screen does not darken when I close the case (nor do I get the click sound) if the Lock/Unlock toggle is turned off.

This means that, if I want to avoid unnecessary battery drain on the iPad Air 2, I must set the toggle to lock whenever I close the case; if it doesn't lock, it doesn't power down the display. That's not the way things used to be with my old iPad 2, nor is it the way it is with the iPad mini 2. Irritating.

It could be that the sensitivity of alignment of the cover may be an issue in ISO 8. I noticed that my 2nd gen ipad air was  sometimes not shutting off after becoming a beta tester for 8. As it turns out, the adhesive strip that was attaching the magnet to the cover was stretching so the cover was not aligning with the iPad with prexcision leading to the iPad not going to sleep. Today, the cover failed. The adhesive strip joining the magnlet to the cover seems very flimsy for a joint that gets so much movement and flex. Still, it lasted an extra year after its warranty. But this is definitely the weakest aspect of the Smart Cover and apple engineering should do better.

In the updates the Lock/Unlock is located in the "Display and Brightness" tab.

    Display and Brightness>Lock/Unlock>On

I would hope the OP figured it out since he hasn't been active and the thread is 2 years old.

Maybe the OP did. But being a level 7 user, you of all people should know that many people have the same problem an browse these discussions looking for answers.
