Q: Can't open any project or backup files from external drive

Hi everyone,

The way I had things set up, is that my final cut pro project was saved on the external drive. Everytime I open it, it picks up from the external drive. Recently, I had a power outage which shutdown my external drive and crashed my FCP X. When I turned things back on, I kept getting an error that FCP quit unexpectedly. I have the option to Ignore or Reopen. I tried opening my backups but I get the same error. Sometimes it would tell me to save it on the internal drive and it would actually open, but I get a lot of missing file links. My mac doesnt have a lot of space, so I need it to be stored on the external drive.

I thought it might be my sharing and permissions of the drive from the get info menu, so I gave all access, but doesnt work. I tried trashing the FCP preference but that didnt work.

I have version 10.2.3 and on Mac OSX 10.11.6 El Capitan

Could anyone please help me? I don't know what else to do.

Final Cut Pro X, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

If the external mounts OK, can you find the problem Library, right click the Library icon then select

    Show Package Contents.

Can you post a screen shot please?

Nothing there that I was expecting.

Have you tried a Backup from your Movies folder?

    It's called Final Cut Backups.

If that does not work trash the CurrentVersion.Flexolibrary in the Package Contents.

I have already tried opening all backups, but any backups located on the external drive will not open for Final Cut Pro files. I also just deleted the CurrentVersion.Flexolibrary but unfortunately, did not work either .

If you have more than one Library, hold the Option key as FCP X starts.

Try and open any other Library.

Could you show a screen shot of the contents of this folder?

    Hi Al,

I have already done this as well. Any libraries I had on the external drive will not open; however, the libraries I have internally, opens.

Based on that idea, I decided to create a new library and placed it in my external drive. Sure enough, it was able to open. So I opened the package contents from the corrupted one and copied it over to the new library. And everything works!

Thank you for showing me how to open package contents as it really helped resolved the issue. Appreciate your time!

TThanks fir sharing this. When you were open the broken libraries to remember exactly at what point it failed and how far in loading the library you'd gotten?

    Hi Tom,

Ever since the power cut off the external hard drive, I was unable to open any FCP files within that drive, including backups. I would always get an error that FCP has quit unexpectedly. However, FCP files located on my mac (internally), works just fine. No matter what I did, I couldn't get those FCP files/backups located on my external drive, to open in FCP at all.

So I created a brand new library and saved it on my external drive. Removed its package contents and replaced it with the one that wouldn't open in FCP. This solved my problem.

TThanks. I understand that. Glad you found a solution.  When you were trying to open the corrupted libraries do you remember when the application crashed? Did it happen right after the splash screen appeared? Did the interface appear before the library opened and then it crashed? Or did the library appear in the browser and then crashed as it started to open the project? Anything you can remember might to helpful and finding a way to avoid this.
