No app on the iPod is required.
- If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected, on a computer browser go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
- You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
- If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
- Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
- There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.

Apr 25, 2014 6:54 AM in response to Isita bieberby varjak paw,Again, if the iPod is off, there's no way to track it. It has to be powered up and connected to WiFi so it can report its position. You'll have to look for it, though it sounds like it's been stolen, not lost. Notify the police and change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPod (the iTunes Store, for instance).
Regards.

Location of an iOS device depends on it calculating its position from GPS or from local wifi-networks and then transmitting its location over the internet to Apple's servers and thus to your 'Find My iPhone' app. Obviously, in order to do this it needs to be on and able to connect to a network. Locating a device with no battery, or which is off, would require magic, not technology.
