Q: How can I delete an email stuck in my iPhone's Outbox?

I recently tried sending a video shot on my iPhone 5S in an iPhone email using Apple's Mail app.  The email did not go out.  It is stuck in my outbox seemingly trying now for 4 months to actually upload the video.  The swirly thing just keeps swirling and nothing I do can delete or even reopen the email so I can edit the video out or some other remedy.

I can't help but feel that this activity is part of what's slowing down my  iPhone and eating up my power.

Tried restarting iPhone, swiping the loading message, trying to find it on iCloud to deal with it there, nothing works. (I does not appear on iCloud.  iCloud does not appear to have an Outbox)  I have also just deleted the video that the rogue email is trying to upload to send.

Any ideas on how to delete this message from my outbox??

Despite wha tit says below I'm using iOS 9.3.4 on my iPhone now, but was probably using whatever the current iOS version was back in April when I shot the video and tried to email it.

I was not even aware of this problem until recently.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.1

What email account are you trying to send this with? You can try putting your device into Airplane mode, then open your mail app, go to the Outbox and then delete the mail. You can turn Airplane mode off after that. This should clear the error. Worse case, go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and delete the mail account, then add it back again. I guarantee you that is a cause for premature battery drainage.

As far as what iOS you are using, if you are referring to the information in the footer area of your post, that is set in your profile. You can select your profile and edit that information, by clicking on your name in the upper left area of the page, then selecting your profile. The information is down to the bottom area there, and you can select the edit button to the right of the info area you wish to change.

Your first paragraph is genius. Thank you for saving my sanity.

Thanks for your response.  Unfortunately the Airplane mode approach did not work.  This bugger is really stuck there...

I feel very foolish but when I go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars, to delete the mail account, then add it back again, I'm stuck.

Of the the three accounts that my iPhone Mail app is drawing email from, the one that I probably used to compose this rogue email is my iCloud .mac email account (not either of my gmail accounts)

I see no way to "delete" my iCloud mail account (steve.weinberg@mac.com + other .mac aliases I use)

Can you help me through those next 1 or 2 steps?

I am reasonably confident that after adding that .mac iCloud mail account back on my iPhone, it will repopulate itself from the iCloud with all sent and received mail, drafts, junk mail, recently deleted mail, etc.

The rogue email is the only one currently in my outbox.

    Help again, I beseech thee.

Is it possible to access your iCloud account via web browser? I do not use iCloud mail, so I couldn't answer that. Was that the account you selected to send the mail, or was that your default mail account? Those would be the only ways the video should have been attempted to send.
