Q: I have a late 2008 aluminum MacBook running El Capitan 10.11.6. The computer cam with 2 GB ram and the instructions say there is a maximum of 4GB. Is that cap still valid or can I add 8GB?

Yes, your MacBook accepts two 4GB RAM sticks, total 8GB, though you'd better update the firmware Version MB51.007D.B03.
