Q: 10.11.6 update making my battery not charge?

Is anyone else finding this happen after they update to 10.11.6? I went through every suggested remedy for this problem with no change. The only thing I haven't tried is rolling back to 10.11.5.

Already did:

  1. SMC reset
  2. PRAM reset
  3. Restarting in Recovery mode
  4. Resetting the power adapter
  5. Heating the power adapter
  6. Cleaning the contacts
  7. Trying another power adapter

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 2.3 i7, 8g RAM, 480g SSD, 700g HD

Open System information and post this from your MBP:

Make certain that the charger is connected:

Also run an Apple Hardware Test:

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

    Ciao.

I couldn't run AHT at first but I found the way to load it from the internet. I did a simple and extended test, both reported no problems.

The System Information>Power report indicates that your charger is not functioning properly.  Try it on another Mac and if it is working, you may be dealing with a failed DC input board.  If the charger does not work on another Mac, then it is faulty.

I tried two other chargers on this laptop and neither charge. I tried the charger on another laptop and they charge the other laptop. From this evidence with what you say, I need a new DC input board.

It appears that you have isolated the problem to be an internal one.  Though the DC input board is the prime suspect, an evaluation at an Apple store genius bar would be an excellent option.  It will be FREE.

I took this laptop to the Apple Genius Bar and their findings were inconclusive.  Upon doing some testing with my laptop together and partially disassembled,  the tech thought that it was most likely the battery itself but he didn't rule out a problem somewhere on the motherboard.

My next step has been to take it to a local repair shop who has done good work before repairing a different issue and see what they can find.

The repair shop discovered that the DC Input Board was in fact the issue. Apparently one of the connecting wires had been pinched in the case and had finally broken connection.

    Thanks OGELTHORPE!
