Q: Cannot update iOS or backup phone

I recently bought my wife a 6s.  I booted the phone and restored using a backup from her 5s.

Now I see that the phone has an OS update.  I poke the Install Now, then Agree two times, and am bounced back to the Install Now option, which is blue again.  Below that button is text that says "You can install this update when your iPhone is finished restoring from the iCloud backup."

I restored the phone several days ago.  It has been plugged in overnight several times.  I see no indication that it is still restoring.

When I go to Backup, I see more odd stuff.  The iCloud Backup is off and the button cannot be slid.  Under the iCloud Backup option is text reading "Automatically back up data such as your photo library, accounts, documents, Health data, Home configuration, and settings when this iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to WiFi.  Learn More."  The Learn More takes me to a pretty useless page offering to sell me storage space.

I'm at a loss.  How can I step through this, hopefully without re-restoring the phone and wiping out some of the customizations I've made?  I need to be able to update the phone's OS and equally importantly need to be able have the phone backup automatically.

Please help!

    Hello dingo!

Thanks for your post. I see that you’re not able to update the new iPhone since it still says it’s restoring from a backup and it’s been restoring for days. I know how important it is to update and find out what is causing it to restore for that long. I’ll be happy to help.

What is likely happening with the restore is this. When you restore from your backup, purchases like music, movies and TV shows aren’t actually stored in the backup, just the purchase history. When you restore from a backup it will then re-download all those items, and some items like that can take a while to download depending on size and internet connection. You can find out more about backups here:

About backups for iOS devices - Apple Support

At this point all the important information like text messages, settings and photos are done restoring and downloading as well as apps. What I recommend is going to Settings > iCloud > Backup and tapping on stop restoring. It may give you a warning that some data restoring may be lost. You won’t lose any information at this point. Once that’s stopped, you can proceed with the update process, but I do recommend having a new backup before you do that.

    Have a great day!

Thanks for this post.  This is, I believe, exactly what is happening.  Is there a way to stop it from downloading movies, TV shows, etc. upon restore in the future?  Was it a setting that I flipped?  I hadn't thought about it downloading my purchased content; I thought that would be a separate task after the phone was rebuilt.

As for telling it to stop restoring, that isn't an option for me.  The iCloud backup options are all dithered.

I think I'm getting close to having it done.  I don't have much time each day to have the phone plugged in on WiFi, but it's got to be almost done.

    Greetings dingo!

There isn’t a way to choose not to restore those purchases next time you restore. The good news is that for this part of the restore, it just has to connect to Wi-Fi, it does’t have to remain plugged in. You are likely right when saying it’s probably close to being done. Once that part if finished you’ll be able to update with no problem.

    Take care!
