Q: FCPX Proxy/Multicam/Library problem

Hi there,

I have problem:

I was working on an older MacPro when I realised, that it maybe too slow for my 14Camera Multiclip.

I had one library on the internal SSD and the Original Footage and the “Proxy Media” was on an internal software RAID.

I copied the Library to a new MacPro.

I copied the Proxy Media from the internal raid to an external HD.

I have two projects in this Library.

Project 1 with my Multicam (14 streams) from Day 1

Project 2 with my Multicam (14 streams) from Day 2

Project 1 acts normal. I don’t have any Original files but the Proxies are there and I am fine.

In Project 2 I am not able to relink the proxies with the proxies folder. But when I switch to “original/optimised” in the viewer I can see my clips.

When I say “show in finder” I’m directed to the Proxy folder. And when I say create Proxies, it creates proxies from the proxies.

So FCPX thinks my Proxies are my original files.

With a transfer Library I positively testet that I am able to connect the library with the Original Footage so I worked on, switching back and forth for each project. But now I have to merge the two Multicams to a Multicam with 28 Streams and have a problem.

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), FCPX 10.2.3

There is a bug where FCPX can lose the link to proxied files.  In which case you can rebuild them, and if they already exist, FCPX sill simply relink to them.  If you're having issues with them, go to the File menu, and delete all generated files for that Library or Event (or Project).  This offers the option to delete the proxies.  Then regenerate them, since it doesn't take that long to do.

I am concern you say you have proxies in one project, but no original or optimized media.  That's pretty dangerous.  How will you output full resolution final product?

And always keep Libraries, cache, and media on a fast external drive, not the system drive.

    Thanks Ben,

in this case transcoding proxies does take time. 14 Cameras more than 1h each!

But anyway I had to do it.  I erased the “missing” proxies and transcoded new ones last night and it worked out. I'm fine now.

No worries about the originals. They exist but on another Drive.

I was expecting not to see any originals in the first project since I didn't copy them to the external HD. The strange thing was that I could only see the proxies from the second project when I switched to original/optimised.  Somehow FCPX mixed up something.

    Thanks again for your thoughts
