Q: OS X 10.10.x and Canon Image Class MF 8350 cdn printing problems

I am running OS X 10.10.1 on a Macbook Pro (late 2012 model).  I have a Canon Image Class MF 8350 cdn multifunction printer.  When I upgraded to OS X 10.10 in October and loaded the Yosemite Canon driver from the Canon website I started experiencing a recurring print problem.

1. At first I could print, then the Mac would say the printer is offline (it wasn't).

2. I would restart Mac and printer and try again.  No luck.

3. Next I deleted the printer and tried to reload it, but the Mac could not find the print driver.

4. I reloaded the driver again, and it worked for a time, but then the Mac would say the printer is offline.

I have experienced the same problem with a Macbook Air running OS X 10.10.

I've reloaded the driver at least 2 dozen times over the past 2 months.  I spent time on the phone with both Apple tech support and Canon support.  I think it is a Canon issue because I had print issues after each OS X upgrade since Snow Leopard.  Anyone else having this problem, or something related with a Canon MF 8350??

thanks

I would contact Canon's tech support for assistance with the problem because they make the printer drivers, not Apple.

I have contacted Canon support and they say their current driver, released 10-20-14 works find.  I believe it is a Canon driver issue and want to know if anyone else in the Apple community having similar problems.

OK.  Did not mean to poll the community.  Does anyone in the community have a solution or idea on how to correct the problem I am having?

    thx

Post a new topic and just ask for help getting a Canon printer to work. Post it in the Printers community so it will catch the eye of those who can help.

I think you will find that an offline message is more about network connectivity than a driver issue. I'm printing to the MF8580Cdw, which is the bigger brother of your model but uses the same Canon MF driver and have not experienced the offline issue.

Based on your opening post I will assume that you have added the printer using Bonjour. There has been many Yosemite users who are having issues with this protocol, that lets you discover the printer when you add it and communicate with the device when you print. So rather than using Bonjour I would recommend you look at using an alternate communication method to see if you suffer the same issues. To do this you need to find what IP address your MF is using. Once you have this information you can open Printers & Scanners and remove the MF8350 printer. Then you can click the plus button to add it again, but this time instead of using the Default view, which lets you see Bonjour advertised printers, you can select the IP icon. You then enter the IP address of the MF and set the Protocol to HP Jetdirect-Socket. Leave the Queue name blank, change the name from the IP address to MF8350 and then select the MF8350 model in the Use menu. Click the Add button to complete the new queue creation. Now open a document and check that you can print.

If you need help with determining what IP address the MF is using then please reply.

    PAHU

Many thanks!!  Your solution worked perfectly.  It didn't occur to me that Bonjour could be at the root of the problem.  I really appreciate your help.  I was getting close to getting a new printer.

    regards

One less printer for the tip!

Note also that if you did encounter this offline issue, open Safari and enter the IP address of the MF. This should result in your connecting to the internal web page of the MF. If this does not happen then you have a network issue, assuming the printer has the same IP address that you used to create the printer.

I've been involved with tech for a long time, and I believe the post from guiness03 is just fine.  it details the problem, points out the issues, and follows the methods attempted for fixes. then, asks for help.

your solution is generic. why would I respond to someone saying "i have a problem printing with my printer, can you help?"

The true method is to ask a better question and get help from the start instead of running through 2000 people who think  they can help but then you worth with 15 and find out they either have no idea what they are talking about or they do not have experience with that ONE particular issue.

I'm not trying to start a war here, and I'm new to the apple platform (is this really the apple way to ask generic questions), and I have this same issue, which is NOW fixed due to the post below....because someone saw the exact issue and had an answer.

    Thank you.
