Q: Several apps don't work after time machine restore

I recently updated my OS from 10.6.8 to Mavericks. Beforehand I did a backup via time machine. I didn't like Mavericks so I restored from the backup. However things aren't the same, now many of my apps don't work, giving error messages upon startup. (Firefox, Word/Excel, Adobe Audition/Photoshop, to name a few - seems like the majority of apps will not open now). These apps are essential to me, anyone have a clue what is going on here?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), null

Hi Michael, run Disk Utility to verify your disk. Repair if necessary.

Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support

Then download and install the Combo Update 10.6.8

    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

The Combo Update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update, so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It should preserve all your data and settings, but that said you should always have a backup.

Thanks for your reply, I followed these instructions and the problem remains. Disk utility says disk is OK.

Please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

While you had Mavericks installed, did you update any of the non-working applications?

No. I had Mavericks installed for 1 day, during which I updated/changed nothing on my system, before restoring back to the backup I made immediately before updating.

See this topic on the Belkin software:

    Cannot uninstall Belkin's software

I suggest removing that and see how your apps function without it.

It is likely that some or all of the problem apps are for Power PC Mac only. Snow Leopard was the last OSX version to incorporate Rosetta that allows Power PC apps to un on a mac with an Intel processor

Upgrading to 10.7 and above, don't forget Rosetta!

You are suggesting I upgrade to 10.7? I don't understand why restoring back to the backup I made on Aug 10, while still running 10.6.8 (all apps opening successfully), right before updating to Mavericks, has given me a dysfunctional system. Is this a failed restore? Did it not restore the system completely, leaving some files changed/updated from the day or so I ran Mavericks? Something doesnt add up here!

Did you backup to the same TM volume when Mavericks was installed?
