Then download and install the Combo Update 10.6.8
Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
The Combo Update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update, so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It should preserve all your data and settings, but that said you should always have a backup.

I don't understand why restoring back to the backup I made on Aug 10, while still running 10.6.8 (all apps opening successfully), right before updating to Mavericks, has given me a dysfunctional system. Is this a failed restore? Did it not restore the system completely, leaving some files changed/updated from the day or so I ran Mavericks? Something doesnt add up here!
