Q: How can I move the main FCPX library from sys HDD to an other HDD

I am an FCPX beginner......

I use a SSD as system diss. I don' like to charge this SSD with such a library. Is there a way to move the main library to an other hard disk?

Many thanks to you all

Assuming the media is inside the library, simply copy it to another drive and delete it from the SSD. It needs to be a Mac formatted drive.

Thanks Tom, In between, not finding a way within FCPX to define the library place, I applied this solution. And effectively it'wOrking!

However, I find this way of doing a bit strange assuming that FCPX is a relative modern soft tool.... But I don't mind if it's working.

Many thanks to you for your very fast reaction

WWhen you create a new library you have the option where to save it, just as saving a document in any application. The default behavior is to store the media inside the library, though this can be changed in library properties.

Thanks Tom, I see what I did, I went over a step creating the library. I made a redo of the sequence and effectively all is OK.

    Many thanks

Using the Finder Copy the Library.

    Paste to the new location.

When you are happy that all is working, delete the first one. Assuming you wish to clear space on your system driver.

Make sure you other drive is formatted to Mac OS Extended.

    Many thanks Al,

As I said to Tom, I passed trough the library creation steps and didn't took care about FCPX was asking the place I wanted to use.

However, I find a bit strange that as soon one have place the library, one only can move it "by hand" it seem that it doesn't exist a software procedure within FCPX.

Once more, many thanks for your fast answer

    Michel.

AS far as I know there no move a document function in Word either, or most apps. What you do have, that's more important, is the ability to move content like events and projects within a library, to another library, or to  a new library from inside FCP.

Perhaps, I badly used the "move" verb. My consideration was about the possibility to choose the place we want to define for a specific action. I mean in Word (and many other soft) one can decide to save a document anywhere in a HDD. But effectively we gone a have duplication of files containing different version of it.... So said than if one have saved the file elsewhere, we owe to pay attention to the place of the older version..... This can bring a lot of discrepancies...

You are right saying the "move" function does not really exist. To be complete, I understand the "move" function as a effective displacement of a folder or a group of folder. Understanding this, I do agree with you.

For the consideration of FCPX, I had to more deeply understand the complete DB philosophy installed in FCPX.

Today I do agree with what you say. But as a beginner, I was reacting as I was used to with many other soft.

Many thanks for your help and discussion! I appreciate a lot
