Q: Several apps don't work after time machine restore

I recently updated my OS from 10.6.8 to Mavericks. Beforehand I did a backup via time machine. I didn't like Mavericks so I restored from the backup. However things aren't the same, now many of my apps don't work, giving error messages upon startup. (Firefox, Word/Excel, Adobe Audition/Photoshop, to name a few - seems like the majority of apps will not open now). These apps are essential to me, anyone have a clue what is going on here?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), null

Did you reinstall the correct version of the Adobe app?

You likely need an old version

Yes, its the exact same install file I originally used to install the program (Audition CS5.5) 5 years ago. I've saved it on my hard drive in case I ever need to reinstall.

Could you have updated that old initial install in the past? Maybe you have to update the app before it install in 10.6.8.

Can't update if I can't open it... If I was able to install Audition CS5.5 on 10.6.8 initially with no problems why would I not be able to do it now, regardless of updates?

What exactly happens when you try to install the app?

It installs fine. When I try to open it, the program bounces in the dock a few times then nothing happens. Word and Excel open up then crash.

After a crash or bouncing open the Console app and look for log entries assocated with the problem app. Note the exact time of the bounce/crash since normally there are many many log entries and they are in chronological order with time stated. Post suspicious ones here

That really does not help which very frequently happens.

I would try reinstalling these two updates with the Combo one first

    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

Mac OS X 10.6.8 Supplemental Update

It appears that your OSX restore has some corruption.

I would backup data and then reinstall 10.6 from DVD ( the retail install disk is 10.6.3) and fully update and try reinstalling the apps.

As a test you can also install 10.6  on an extern USB drive, fully update and see if yo can install and run the apps

Ok I appreciate everyones response but reinstalling 10.6 then reinstalling all my apps is simply not an option. I don't have a 10.6 installation disk, have no clue where to find one, and I dont have installation disks for nearly all my 3rd party apps anymore either. Basically reinstalling 10.6 means I lose all my apps and start from scratch.

What I did was reinstall El Capitan (I incorrectly stated I updated to Mavericks earlier, it was actually El Capitan) and now my apps are working again. So it appears the time machine backup is not TOTAL. Something happened to my apps when I updated to El Capitan the first time, and when I restored back to the backup I made while still running 10.6.8, those changes to the apps remained, and 10.6.8 didn't know what to do with them anymore. This is my theory of course and I know nothing about computers. Looks like I'm gonna have to stick with El Capitan or else not have apps!

In this case, I need help working out the bugs that made me revert back to 10.6.8 in the first place, I've started another thread if anyone can help: Updated to El Capitan from 10.6.8. Deleted items bypass trash and other bugs.
