Q: 160GB iPod classic won't mount in iTunes

Hello,

I'm hoping someone out there can help me.  I have a 160GB iPod classic which still works perfectly well.  Until a few months ago I was able to connect it to my 2012 Mac and sync music to it through iTunes.  Now when I connect it I see the iPod icon on the desktop but it doesn't appear in iTunes.  I've tried all the trouble shooting steps listed on the support pages.  I've tried different cables, all the USB ports, resetting the iPod, restarting my computer.  I have no 3rd party security software running on my Mac.  My version of El Capitan (10.11.6) and iTunes (12.4.3.1) I believe are the most up to date.  I don't know what else to do and I assume Apple is not going to provide support for my dinosaur iPod.  Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Will the device show in the Mac if you put it in disk mode? If so does iTunes now see it?

To enter disk mode hold MENU+SELECT (centre) on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then switch to PLAY+SELECT as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode.  You can reset the device with MENU+SELECT to exit disk mode when you want to.

When I put it into disk mode it still appears on the desktop but not in iTunes.  I should mention that when I connect the iPod to my Mac, iTunes does sort of freeze for about 30 seconds and the lovely spinning colour wheel appears which makes me think for a brief moment that it's going to connect, but then it doesn't. I really appreciate the attempt to help.

There is no sign yet of Apple intentionally removing support for older iPods, but there are the occasional hiccups. Perhaps the next update to OS X or iTunes will put things right again. I no longer have a classic for testing, but an iPod nano I have works fine and they should connect using the same set of protocols.
