Q: El Capitan ver. 10.11.6 - Problems with external display

I updated my Macbook Air to the latest version of El Capitan (ver.10.11.6), and since then I have been having problems using my external monitor: The image is way bigger, out of proportion, and I can't seem to be able to fix zooming out or using the display options. It is just terrible to work with it. It is not my monitor, because I never change its configurations, and there is anybody else that has access to it, and the problem started after I updated to ver. 10.11.6

Any help will be appreciated!

Try using your monitor's DVI or HDMI connection instead of VGA.

How are you connecting to the monitor?
Are you mirroring your display or using extended display?
What is the native resolution of your monitor?

I am connecting through a VGA cable, and I like using the extended display (my computer display is fine, only the external one is weird)
I am using an Acer R240HY monitor (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0148NNKTC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UT F8&psc=1)

That worked in part; I connected the HDMI, the external display went back to normal, but then I lost sound. However, I disconnected and connected the VGA and everything went to normal, which is weird, because it was the first thing I tried when the external display got weird. Anyways, everything is working now, thank you very much for your help!
