Q: Magic Mouse II not clicking

I have a 2011iMac (2.7 GH core i5, 32 GB RAM, 1TB new hard drive and 500 GB new SS drive) running the latest version of El Capitan.  My almost 5-year-old magic mouse stopped regular clicking this weekend, but would still right click and move on the screen.  I tried rebooting, quitting all other programs, checking the bluetooth setup in systems preferences (which had not been changed in forever), etc. but the problem persisted but only intermittently.  Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't.  It had new batteries, using same mouse pad, was clean on the bottom, etc. so I figured it was on its last legs and picked up a new Magic Mouse II.  The new mouse worked fine at first but is now doing the same thing - no regular clicking - but the problem is even more persistent than with the old mouse. Again tried rebooting, checking systems preferences (confirmed old mouse was turned off and then deleted from preferences), and still no joy.  Dug out my old apple trackpad, put in new batteries, and it is doing the same thing.  Any suggestions?
