Q: Installing older OS X on partition?

I have an iMac, Mid-2010 3.06 GHz i3 with 16 GB of ram, and it never occurred to me that with the 500 GB hard drive, I have plenty of space to partition it to be able to install Snow Leopard in order to access older apps that I've purchased throughout the years, not to mention some PowerPC apps as well. However, even when I did a clear wipe of my hard drive when I performed a clean install of OS X about a month ago, I attempted this by inserting my retail disc of 10.6, but my mac wouldn't read it, which I thought was weird because it originally shipped with 10.6 Snow Leopard. I could hear it as soon as when I first inserted the disc, but then about 10 seconds later, it stopped reading the disc as I could hear it wasn't spinning anymore.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
