Q: Help: unable to resolve mac mini display issues

I've been updating my parents' mid 2011 Mac mini and run into serious display and color profile issues. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thus far, I've successfully:

  • upgraded from 2 GB to 8 GB
  • made a Time Machine back up on a new external drive
  • updated to El Capitan
  • moved 17,000 family photos to Photos from iPhoto

Their Samsung S23C570 display was very bright and lacked contrast, buttons were invisible, etc. So I've:

downloaded and installed script from here http://www.mathewinkson.com/2013/03/force-rgb-mode-in-mac-os-x-to-fix-the-pictur e-quality-of-an-external-monitor/comment-page-11#comment-14866

without success, but then rechecked and reversed the VGA cable, read further and did force RGB...and everything looked much worse. Attempted to calibrate, but it is so bright that those screens are washed out. Now, though I'd backed up and reinstalled the original display file I cannot seem to even get a decent display.

The monitor is connected via a VGA cable and a Mini Displayport Adapter to a Thunderbolt port.

I'm ready to restore it to the previous OS...Lion. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
