Q: Is there a shortcut key to override mac start up before it reboots itself?

Halfway into starting up, my MacBook Pro's screen goes black, & it shuts down. Is there a short cut key I can use when the mac starts up to override the start up process before it shuts down?. What is causing this to rebooting/shutting down to happen?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Hi melmanart, start up in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs:
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first. Also give it a little time after start because it runs some maintenance routines in the beginning.)
