Q: app store "software update" not updating

Hello fellow apple users,

I need your help.

When I open the Apple Store to update to the latest "Security Update 2016-004 10.10.5" and Safari 9.1.2,

and it says "Some updates need to finish downloading before there are installed",

I click "Download & Restart" but nothing happens. The computer doesn't re-start to do the system updates.

I even tried downloading the update manually and running it, the installer asks me to click on RESTART, the computer restarts, but the update doesn't install.

I tried repairing permissions, but that did not work.

Any ideas?

Restart your internet modem and Wi-Fi router if you use one, restart your Mac then try again.

If that doesn't work I'd suggest using the 10.11.6 Combo Update. The Combo is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update, so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It should preserve all your data and settings, but that said you should always have a backup.

Also you might use Safe Mode for the install.
Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first. Also give it a little time after start because it runs some maintenance routines in the beginning.)

Thanks for the reply Carolyn.
I don't think is a connection issue cause all the other apps update OK. Is just the System Update that won't do it.

Hi macjack,

Thanks for the reply. Isn't the 10.11.6 Combo Update to install EL CAPITAN?
I am currently using OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. I need Yosemite due to the problems with Adobe Software with the latest OS X versions.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the reply. The 10.5.5 download page has a POST DATE of August 13th 2016.
do these updates get updated to include the most recent system updates? The one with Safari 9.1.2, 2016-004, etc?

I already have OSX 10.5.5 on my computer, I just need the latest security update to install.

All security updates are included in 10.5.6
Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update
Actually, you might as well update to 10.6.8 if you meet the specs and if you do not have any "must have" software that would be incompatible.

Unfortunately, there are lots of issues with El Capitan and ADOBE CS6 software and I need to stick with Yosemite.
I just need to get OSX 10.10.5 Yosemite to update with the latest security update and Safari.

Any idea on why my software is not updating? Thanks

Download OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 Combo UpdateTry download and install in Safe mode, as I mentioned before:
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support (Also for other troubleshooting)

HI macjack,
just want to make sure I am getting want you are saying.

So what you are saying is that even though I am already running 10.10.5 on my computer, if I install 10.10.5 again in safe mode as the combo update, this will also install the latest Safari 9.1.2 and the latest security update 2016-004 as well. Correct?
