Q: Are there printer drivers for HP LaserJet Pro M402dn?

I just had this printer delivered.  When I installed it on my Mac, I saw there is only a generic printer driver.  This means that not only print control is poor but also that I cannot upgrade the firmware (according to the User Guide).  Apparently there are none on the Apple site.  Does anyone know if there are any?    Thanks.  Bill (OS 10.11.6)

   Yup.  Just finished a long chat.  Apparently you are only supposed to get generic drivers with AirPrint which is weird because 1. It is sold as an AirPrint printer so you would think the drivers would install and 2. the correct AirPrint drivers are installed if I plug in the printer to my Mac which really means that it isn't on AirPrint but just shared from computer over my wireless network.  Sounds like a bug to me.  The worrisome thing is that the HP User Guide states that some features will be disabled with a generic drive.  They don't say which ones.  My Canon Deskjet installs the correct drivers as did my old HP P2015d when plugged into my AirPort Extreme.

So I did some playing around.  If I plug the printer into my Mac via USB and printer sharing, it loads the correct driver.  It is then recognised by other Macs on my wireless network but two printer options.  One loads the correct driver and the other loads a driver not related to the printer at all.  Both print.

  Still tempted to take the printer back as it doesn't really do what it says it does on the box.  May just wait for the next OS X where is might be fixed.  But it is a pain because I have to keep the printer plugged into my MacBook Pro and can't no wandering or leave the house.  However I do have an old MacMini which I have set up as a media server.  Might use that an HP print server.

Oh you can plug in the Ethernet to the Airport and that works but with a generic printer, too.  Bummer.

    Hi.  Thanks.  Actually that worked but not all the way.  When I installed the printer yesterday, I plugged it into my MacBook Pro and that was fine but I couldn't upgrade the firmware for some reason.  When I installed the printer on my Airport Extreme, all I could get was a generic printer.  This morning (after posting) I plugged the printer back into my Mac and it installed the AirPrint driver and I could upgrade the firmware.   I then tried the same when plugged into the Airport, I could only get the generic drivers.  So although it claims to be an AirPrint printer, it really isn't.  Thanks for you help but it looks like this will be something for Apple to fix as as the drivers are out there.  It's just that you can't use them to so what they advertise they will do.  Bill
