Q: The email share button on Safari is faulty

Hi,

I can't use the share button on Safari with the email functionality.

It launches a blank tab in Chrome which is strange because this is just another browser.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    Backup the Mac.

Share button shows “No Service” or menu items missing?

If this doesn’t help, backup the computer and reinstall OS X El Capitan from OS X Recovery.

    Hi Dominic,

    The button looks like this:

Clicking "email this page" launches Chrome and opens a blank tab. It doesn't function correctly.

The button has no mention of "No Service". All other buttons are functioning ok but, I have noticed at times that they all can be temperamental from time to time. Usually is less buggy after a restart.

I have backed up the computer and done a fresh install of El Capitan. This should not be the issue. In the past I think I have tried to do a Safari delete and reinstall but that didn't work either.

I'd like to use this service. I was hoping that Apple would have picked this up already.

Did you try the Terminal command from the article dominic posted a link for? For some people, this has 'reset' the shared option even though the symptoms weren't what was listed in the support article.

I've tried that and restarted the browser. This made no difference. I also opened up system preferences and you can see the option is graded out so I can't even test it out there.

The only thing left that comes to mind is that I don't open up the Mail application very often on my desktop because I use Gmail instead.

Is the chrome icon normal for this function?

In Mail/Preferences/General, what is Default email reader set to?

Thanks for this hint, I'm getting a bit closer to the problem now.

It's the Chrome Handlers settings. I found some instructions about that here: http://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/set-gmail-as-browser-default-email-client-ht#s m.001ibxd301020e05xgp1ykaac7aa7

I also didn't set up Mail after reinstalling the OS on the machine. I have found that the Handlers settings in Chrome are overwriting the settings that I made in Mail/Preferences/General.

The problem still remains that the mail client in Mail > Preferences > Default email reader is getting overwritten by Chrome. This is even when I disable / turn off the Handlers in Chrome. I have toggled Mail as the preferred application and it just goes back to Chrome when executed the action.

When I deleted Chrome the Mail application it works fine with sharing via Mail. So that's a good sign.

What annoys me is why I can't just use the share option within Safari itself. Can't it open mail?

I do need Chrome on my machine though - so at this stage I don't know how to clear these preferences properly.
