Q: How do you define the slide to show after the title slide in a template master?

Apparently, in each of the templates supplied with Keynote there is an setting that informs which slide to show after the title slide.

For example:

  1. I create a new document and choose a template.
  2. After choosing one a new document opens showing the Title slide (Title & Subtitle).
  3. When you create a new slide after completing the master slide it adds a slide with a different template (e.g. Title & Bullets)

I have created a new template from scratch. The problem is that point 3 from the above list doesn't happen. So when I open a new document with my custom template it opens up on the Title Slide. However, when I create a slide after that it shows me the same Title Slide template again.

Where can I define which master template to use for the second slide, or the slide following a title slide?

It looks like you have only created one slide Master in your custom Theme,  you will need to create additional slide masters for each slide design you want to have available in that particular Theme.

These are the slide masters available from the inbuilt Typeset Theme:

I have definitely created more slides than just one slide Master. Please refer to the attached image.

When a new slide is added,   (Slide > New Slide   or   command shift N)   Keynote is programmed to use the same master slide as used in the previous side.

Your screen grab shows Keynote is using the "titelslide" master, therefore what happens when you click one of the other 6 master slides in the chooser, doesn't it change the master slide correctly?

This is not the case in the Apple default templates for the first two slides you create. Give it a go.

When you create a new presentation with an Apple template the first slide will be the title master slide, the slide you create after that is a content master slide.

What you say is only true for the third and further slides you create after that. So the third slide uses the same master as the second slide. My custom template doesn't follow the same behaviour as the default templates. The second slide is the same as the first one.

I would think that if Apple's default templates can let Keynote know which master to use for the second slide, so should I in my custom template.

Yes thats correct for Apple created themes, but your question is about using custom themes, not built in themes. Custom themes must be selected manually, after all thats what using a custom theme with custom slide masters is all about.

I would think that if Apple's default templates can let Keynote know which master to use for the second slide, so should I in my custom template.

There isn't a way for users to programme Keynote to use a specific slide master for any given project.

The whole point of creating a custom theme is to create a unique design for a particular presentation. I certainly don't want Keynote to always use the second slide master when I add a second slide, that would defeat the purpose of a customised design.     I decide what slide master to use, not Keynote.

To repeat, to select a slide master, click on the change master button and choose the appropriate slide master.zzz.png

Thanks for your effort to answer the question Gary. This is all I needed to know.

The rest of your reply is of course completely subjective and is not helping me answer my question.

Custom themes must be selected manually, after all thats what using a custom theme with custom slide masters is all about.

The whole point of creating a custom theme is to create a unique design for a particular presentation. I certainly don't want Keynote to always use the second slide master when I add a second slide, that would defeat the purpose of a customised design.     I decide what slide master to use, not Keynote.

I would say that the whole point of creating a custom theme is not to create a unique design for a particular presentation. If you wanted to do that, you'd be lot more efficient to design the actual presentation. The whole point of a custom theme is to create a custom design that you want to use more often. The purpose of themed templates is to save you time by letting you set default designs and functionality. And as someone who creates dozens of presentations a week for a number of clients I use templates to customise the look of these presentations to each client. But that's just my opinion.

While we're sharing opinions. I certainly do want Keynote to always use the second slide master when I add the second slide. The functionality of the Apple created themes to automatically switch to a different master page after the first title slide is worthwhile to me because it saves me a bit of time. In my experience it is also a completely logical function. After all, in none of my presentations I use two title slides in a row.

You and I obviously have different use cases for keynote. That's why it is great we can customise our templates. And to go back to my original question: I saw a functionality that benefits my use case, being used in Apple's default templates. The fact that it is possible in their templates led me to belief I should be able to define this behaviour in my templates as well.

And after all of that, regardless of your opinion on how to use custom templates, we have established a simple fact:

    it is not possible.

Again thanks for your time to help me resolve this question
