Q: How to merge iPhoto and Photos library
Greetings!
I have been facing issues with hard disk utilisation so I looked at what is using up all that space. I see that Pictures is quite sizeable and underneath have the following directories.
244614 ./Pictures
141713 ./Pictures/iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary
116997 ./Pictures/iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary/Masters
74082 ./Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary
62927 ./Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary/Masters
It seems to me that iPhoto and Photos app have different libraries. I do not use iPhoto anymore and upgraded to Photos when it came out and I am not sure if my Photos library has the iPhoto contents.
Can someone suggest how to merge the two and have one database while saving space and without loosing any treasured photos?

You can not merge libraries with either iPhoto or Photos
And when you migrated the resulting Photos library exactly matched the source iPhoto library - unless you have added photos to the iPhoto library since you migrated then theere is nothing in it that is not in your Photos library
There is no connection between the iPhoto library and Photos library and either can be deleted with no effect on the other one - but it does not save much space since both libraries reference the same originals and previews - Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support - and if you are going to delete the iPhoto libraries it is a good idea to archive them first just in care you need them
And of course the only way to not lose any treasured photos is to always have good current backups of everything as if you do not you are 100% guaranteed to lose things sooner or later
