Q: How to create folders in FCPX

I am editing feature length documentary film in latest version FCPX with MAC Pro using El Capitan latest version.

My questions is:  How do I create folders?

When I create a folder and try to drag an event or project into it, it doesn't accept it??  In FCP7 I could create folders easily and drag files into it.

For example:  I want to create a folder that is POND.  I want to add footage of the Pond filmed over several years in different seasons.  Then create sub folders within POND for each of the four seasons.

What I have been able to do is create a folder than open an event and transfer the files in the event to the folder.  Then the event is empty, so I guess I trash the event?? That doesn't seem to be a good workflow method.  I understand I can go under smart collection and create a new smart collection but I can't drag events to that either.

I Like using FCPX but maybe I haven't adjusted my thinking from FCP7 on this part of media workflow. There must be a simple solution but I can't seem to find it.  Any suggestions or tutorial links will be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Peace, Huey

Folders are only to hold smart collections (Favorites, keywords, smart searches, etc).  You don't make folders in FCPX as they're pretty limited.  That's what we use Keywords, Smart Searches, Favorite/Rejected Ratings, Notes, etc, for.  Way faster, way easier.  Don't make X work like 7, you'll just bang your head against the wall.  Forgot how 7 works, learn X's media management.  So worth while.

Thanks, I'll check out the link and try to get my head to erase FCP 7 and embrace FCP X.

I know you're ready to get to work on your project and to play with your new software but you really want to spend a week figuring out FCPX. You're thinking, "How hard can it be?" and the answer is Stupid Hard. Maybe take an online course. Tom Wolsky and BenB both have great resources for you at their websites. Pay attention to the media organization and project organization sections. As BenB suggests, you must forget most of what you know about video editing from FCP7.

Apple reinvented video editing and your previous experience with FCP7 or Premiere will only frustrate you and waste your time.

Try to enjoy learning FCPX. Once you've gotten over the major changes in the paradigm, you're never going to want to edit on a conventional timeline again. But it's a struggle.
