Q: Apple TV won't connect to Mac Book Pro (MBP) except directly with ethernet cable
I have the newest version of AppleTV with all updates installed on it. I have the latest version of iTunes with all updates. I have a Mac Book Pro (MBP) running El Captain with all patches applied.
I have rebooted in the following order:
- Router
- MBP
- Apple TV
The Apple TV is connected to our Wi Fi network and can go out to the internet get updates and content.
When I launch iTunes there is no icon for Apple TV next to the volume slider. Home Sharing is turned on (I have toggled it on and off several times). There is no icon for Apple TV on the MBP either.
I can connect an ethernet cable between the MBP and the Apple TV and they work flawlessly, the Apple TV will mirror whatever I have displayed on the MBP.
As soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable, I lose the Apple TV icon on the MBP and the MBP display stops on the TV.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?? This is frustrating!!!

Is there some reason you're not using AirPlay > Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV - Apple Support
