Q: Migration Assistant Trouble

I am trying to use Migration Assistant to transfer files/apps from a MacBook Air, circa 2014, to a MacBook Air, circa 2010.  Both Macs are running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6.  When I open Migration Assistant on the 2014 Mac and select "Transfer To" it does not see the 2010 Mac over the wireless connection, and they are both on the same wireless connection.  The 2010 Mac can see the 2014 Mac but when I select 'Continue' after highlighting the 2014 Mac it cannot connect to that Mac and gives me the following error message:

Unable to Connect

" --- MacBook Air" could not be reached.  Ensure both computers are on and connected to the same network.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I also have a USB 3.0 to USB 3.0 cable but I have not read anywhere that I can use those ports for migration.
