Q: iPhone 5s IOS 9.3.4 update battery fluctuating/dying

Hello,

I have been having serious issues with my iPhone 5s since i update to IOS 9.3.4 last week in regards to the battery life and my phone becoming very unreliable because of it. An example is today i had 30% green battery left, swiped up to take a photo to then have the message 'less than 10% battery left' pop up, so i clicked the button to the homepage to find i had only 1% battery left! Another example is having a good amount of battery left (still in green battery) then the phone dying and having the black screen with the faded out diagram of a battery with a red bit, what usually comes up on the screen if you run out of battery, but when i then plug the phone in to charge again it immediately jumps up to a high percentage again. This problem has only occurred since i updated to the latest software update, and is making my phone so unreliable I can't trust to go out with it and use it for work purposes incase I get somewhere and it just does on me AGAIN. Very frustrating problem.

Has anyone else had this problem? Know how to fix it? What should I do?

Thanks Laura

Please check this article for suggestions, particularly turning off Background App Refresh.

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/

Also try downloading the app Battery Life which is available for free from the App Store. Test the battery with it and if defective, schedule an appointment at an Apple store for possible replacement.

The turning off of Background App Refresh isn't going to solve the problem, it will just mean I can't use my phone in the same way as I have since Ive had it. The update is seriously draining my battery, within a matter of 5 minutes it has drained from 16% to 7% and I've barely used it! and had turned off all apps! So its not apps.

I've had the exact same issue. No idea what's going on.

Can't even downgrade anymore because Apple discontinued previous upgrade files.

I didn't have the battery problem from what I know, but your second example of having half full battery and then it dying did happen to me. Except in my case the screen went totally black and didn't even show the red "needs to charge" battery. I forget if it was the same event or not but around the same time my phone battery "died" two different times -or I thought it had died - right after using two different apps. One of them was the time lapse function in the camera app. I had let the camera sit for an hour or so, and then I thought it ironic that as soon as I pressed stop on the time-lapse shot the phone's battery died. However when I plugged the phone in it didn't show the red battery function. I was really hoping that my phone didn't just completely die on me. I reset the phone by pressing the power button and the circle button for a few seconds. To my relief the phone started up again... And I think it said it had half battery life!

    Hi Laura (+),

I had this issue pop up on 3 this week one of which was mine and another was my colleague who manages a phone fix it business. The solution for us was to install the update (ios 9.3.5). Somehow without Apple giving us a heads about about this potential issue, updating to ios 9.3.5 cured the issue for us both today.
