Q: iPad 2nd generation - is it broken for good?

I have an 2nd gen iPad - Model: A1458, Serial: DMPMNTAXF185.

I've barely used this iPad since I bought it around 2/3 years ago. When I have used it it's been for browsing the internet and for games (I'm a rubbish user I know..!!). It had been turned off for months, and when I turned it on to start using it again, I had 30 mins use until I completely lost the ability to use the WiFi. On the settings, the option to turn WiFi on is completely greyed out. I tried turning the iPad off but it froze and the screen went blue. I managed to resolve this by plugging the iPad into my laptop and it came back on again - with the WiFi tab greyed out. I've spoken to Apple Support and we managed to restore the iPad to original factory settings and this brought back the WiFi option... for all of 30 mins again before the whole cycle repeated itself. This has happened 4-5 times since, then I just gave up. I turned the iPad on again the other day and all was fine, used it for 30 mins and the exact same thing happened again. The only difference being this time, the iPad didn't freeze, I can still use it but the WiFi tab is greyed out. I'm contemplating selling it on eBay and buying a newer one if I can resolve this - but it would be great to save some money if anyone can help. I actually need an iPad now for work so I have much more of a need to use one properly!

Thanks in advance! H.

Have you tried a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?

Have you tried charging the iPad on its charger and not on your laptop (which only provides antiny trickle charge) until the battery reaches 100%

    Hello,

Yes I've tried both of those things. Unfortunately the cycle just seems to continue

Brand new from Tesco Direct - unfortunately I did not take out any insurance though. It has barely been used since purchasing.

If you have a physical Apple Store  that you can take your iPad to, I would take it in for a free diagnosis and free estimate for either a repair or a replacement.

If it turns out to be just a battery replacement issue, Apple charges $100 U.S.D. for a replacement battery.

If there is anything else wrong with your iPad, Apple may charge you up to half of what you, originally, paid to get a replacment model.

    Good Luck!

Thank you - I will definitely try this! I'll post again once I've been to a store, I'm aiming to go within the next 2 weeks.

    Thanks again!

I have just been on the phone to an Apple genius as I couldn't wait! They have narrowed the problem down to a fault with the WiFi antenna (this took such a long time as when trying to run diagnostic tests my iPad kept crashing and greying out the WiFi tab) and therefore my iPad needs to be sent away to be serviced. This is going to cost me over £200 as I am not under Apple warranty so the cheaper option is going to be to sell my iPad and by a new one/ a different model of tablet!

    Thank you for your help!
