Q: My new printer doesn't appear in the list of printers

I've purchased a new HP Officejet Pro 8715 and I've had great difficulty getting it set up to use. It seems the method for getting print and scan drivers has changed drastically since my last new printer. HP no longer supplies a CD with software, but rather everything is supposed to happen automatically via Apple software when I plug the printer in. This has not been the case.

At this point I have the printer working (4 hours spent), but I can't get the "Readiris" scanning software to work. I'm told, again, that if I just plug the printer in via USB and turn it on, then the OS knows what software to load. In reality, it doesn't "know" or "do" anything.

I have tried to set it up manually by going into System Preferences>Print & Scan and then clicking the plus sign to add the printer software. This brings up a huge list of printers, but the list ends with "Officejet Pro 8660." My printer is an 8715, so there is nothing for my printer. Installing the software for 8660 did not help resolve the problem.

Two questions:

1. Why doesn't Apple's list of printers contain my printer?

2. How can I get the Apple software to show drivers for my printer?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!
