Aug 19, 2016 3:31 PM in response to Roy's iPadby LarryHN,For starters we need details - what version of the OS and of Photos are you using? What are your iCloud settings on the Mac and on each IOS device? What exactly do you want to do? In Photos folders are not for Photos, albums are for Photos and folders for albums or other folders

Info:
Mac Book Pro Retina, version OSX 10.9.5 (13F1911), iCloud settings = all on except keychain?
Ipad model MH1J2CL/A version 9.3.4, iCloud settings = all on
iPhone 5 ME298C/A version 9.3.4 , iCloud = all on
I had all my photos transferred to my mac when I purchased it two weeks ago. They were all in folders that I had set up on my pc to file my pictures. I would take photos mostly with my iPhone and they would download to my pc through iCloud. I would then add file names and drag and drop them to their appropriate folders. It was a very simple and smooth working process. I assumed I would be able to do the same thing on my newly acquired mac book pro. But I am finding that I can't get my folders to list on a side bar in iPhoto. Seems the photo library is a separate entity and does not recognize my old photo files. I also can't seem to browse iPhoto from my family tree project. Would appreciate any help you can offer.

Aug 21, 2016 10:49 AM in response to Roy's iPadby LarryHN,★HelpfulOk since you have OS X 10.9.5 you are not using Photos where you posted but iPhoto (probably version 9.5.1 but please confirm what version of iPhoto you are using
and you need to learn a whole new paradigm of managing photos not managing files - using iPhoto you never touch or access the underlying files - you work with a SQLite database of photos and everything is done virtually - the original is never modified and all editing is lossless - the edits are recorded in the database and applied when you view or export the photo - in iPhoto albums are use for organization and again are virtual - nothing is moved but an album is simply one way to view a selected set of photos and a photo can be in any number of albums with no increase in disk space - and albums can be places in folders and folders can also be placed in folders so you can build as complicated an organizational structure are you want
To access your photos you use the media browser of the iPhoto application - never the finder -- How to Access Files in iPhoto
Only photos that have been imported to Photos can be used with Photos

Aug 19, 2016 7:10 PM in response to Roy's iPadby Roy's iPad,iPhoto is version 9.4.3. Its all pretty confusing. Not sure were to go now. My family tree program is pretty important to me and photos can only be imported from the program through browsing. I am afraid I have made a huge mistake by going Apple. There are so many applications or functionality that doesn't exist on apple. I had no idea. thanks for trying to help me out.
