Q: Pain Brush Reveal Effect
I'm new to FCP and I'm running FCP X on El Capitan. I'd appreciate if someone could offer advice or point me in the right direction on how to achieve the Paint Brush Reveal effect in this video;

Thanks so much!

Okay - this is pretty easy:
Start a new Title project. I'm only going to lay out the paint brush effect, you will need to deal with the text part yourself. It does seem to me that having text available with this effect will be an asset. The benefit of the title is that you can place it over the storyline wherever it's needed without further cutting your video.
Select the Group and click on the + at the bottom left of the Layers List. That will create a new top-level group ("Group 1").
Select the Paint Brush tool and draw a zigzag on the canvas. Doesn't have to be neat... or even "good"! You can tweak it later. (I will assume for now that you know how to edit a path with "Edit Points".)
In the Inspector > Style, click on the Shape Style button and select Traditional > Acrylic 03 from the popup menu. In the Outline pane, set the width to about 300. Uncheck Reverse Stacking.
To the Paint Stroke add Behaviors > Shape > Write On. Move the Playhead to about 1:15 (45 frames) and type the 'o' key to set an out point.
Right click on the Title Background and Add Image Mask. Drag and drop the Paint Stroke Group (Group_1) onto the Image Mask "layer".
Move the playhead just past the end of the animation and click in the Layers List column on the background to deselect any selected layers. Type the '`' (aka, the tilde ~ key) to add a project Marker. Type Command-Option-M to call up the Markers dialog. From the Type dropdown, select Build In Mandatory.
Select the Group_1 "layer" and publish its Position, Rotation and Scale Parameters.
In FCPX, place the title over the section of video you want the effect to appear.
For an extra touch, you could add a fade in to full screen at the end. To do that go back into Motion.
Select Group_1 and Add a Generator > Generators > Color Solid. (This is why we dragged the whole group into the mask layer so we don't have to rework it now.)
In the Inspector > Properties, set the Scale to 400% (this needs to be large enough to move around the canvas and still completely cover the "background"). Go down to the Blending pane and set the Opacity to 0.
Move the playhead to about 1 second from the end of the project and set a keyframe. Move the playhead to the end of the project and set the opacity to 100%.
Move the Playhead to just before the fade up begins, deselect all layers (as above) and add another Marker.
Type Command-Option-M to call up the Marker dialog and from the Type dropdown, select Build Out Optional (you will have the option of the fade up effect or not having it play.) Build Out optional will automatically publish a Build Out option in the published parameters.
You can do whatever you like with the text: delete it or add published parameter controls. I would recommend for this template that you select the text and in the Text inspector > Layout panel, that you select Layout Method: Type (aka: plain) and publish its Position and Rotation parameters. I would also recommend setting the initial alignment to Centered. (Almost) everything else you could need for text will be in the Text inspector in FCPX.
